  By Theodore Jurado DEFENDING champion University of Santo Tomas went to the wringer before defeating La Salle, 21-19, 22-20, to become the lone unbeaten women’s team in the UAAP beach volleyball tournament yesterday at the UE Caloocan sand court. The Tigresses’ pair of reigning MVP Judy Caballejo and Maru Banaticla grabbed the solo lead with a 3-0 record entering the halfway mark of the short elimination round. Reigning MVP Judy Caballejo and Maru Banaticla of the Tigresses needed three sets to survive Adamson’s Pau Soriano and Sheila Pineda, 19-21, 21-16, 15-13, and returned in the afternoon session with an easy 21-13, 21-13 win over Loryvel Faytaren and Sam Dawson of Far Eastern University. By Theodore Jurado THE Philippines, represented by Ateneo standouts Fille Cainglet and Bea Tan, will compete in the tough 2012 FIVB Ulsan Women’s Beach Volleyball Exhibition starting tomorrow at the Jinha Beach in Ulsan, South Korea. A total of 10 teams from nine countries, including host Korea, Spain, Austria, United States, New Zealand, Czech Republic, Japan, and the Netherlands will compete in the three-day exhibition. The preliminary matches will take place on the August 15 and 16, followed by both the semifinals and the finals on the 17th. The Philippines is the lone Southeast Asian country in the competition.
