Volleyball United: Project Banaba
WE all saw how monsoon rains last week flooded not only houses and property all over Luzon, but dreams of Filipinos, who were left to shout, scream and then run for their lives as torrential rains formed floods taller than houses.
One of the hardest hit areas is Barangay Banaba in San Mateo, Rizal, where a light drizzle casts fear into the hearts of residents. Now, 90% of people there live in evacuation centers, where there is not enough food, medicines, space and sanitation. Kids are getting sick, adults are getting ill and even animals like pigs, cats and dogs sleep beside humans.
That is why we are starting an initiative called VOLLEYBALL UNITED, a two-phase project that we hope will help alleviate the sufferings of people in Banaba and rebuild what has been washed away last week.
A report we obtained from the area showed almost 3, 000 families and 15, 000 residents badly in need of food, medicine, clothes, school supplies, and most of all, construction materials that they will need as they attempt to rebuild their lives.
With this, we invite you to a charity volleyball game on September 22, 2012 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City. We have also asked the UAAP to help by allowing their “stars” to help and match up against some of the most successful volleyball players of the past decade.
On game day, we also urge you to bring donations in kind, of which a list of advised goods we will be posting here soon.
Tickets will be available next week on all SM Tickets outlets located at SM Cinemas all over the country. We also hope to show the video via the SM Digital Theaters so we can send the message to more people who can help.
The second part of VOLLEYBALL UNITED will be the actual community service we will be rendering on October 6. We will be distributing all the donations we have gathered, conduct a medical mission and help repaint houses all in one day. We also hope to do other activities, like story-telling, gift-giving and the re-stacking of the community library for children.
To show unity, we also invite you — whether you are a fan, a player, a coach or whatever — to join us in this second phase by offering yourself to serve the people of Banaba on that Saturday.
We love one sport and we are on one mission —- to help our kababayans in their fight. Let’s show everyone that one volleyball community can spark change. Let us be one.
